Lapis Lazuli
Lapis Lazuli
Long before it was a pigment, lapis lazuli was a journey.
Drawn from ancient mountain mines to the east, the stone travelled along Persian trade routes as something rare and sacred. Its blue — deep as night, flecked with gold — found its way into palaces, manuscripts, tiles, and talismans. In Persia, lapis became the colour of the infinite.
Ground into powder, it transformed into the most precious of blues. Artists used it sparingly, reserving it for the divine and the eternal — the heavens in miniature paintings, the quiet intensity of eyes, the stillness of sacred space. In architecture, its spirit lives on in domes and mosaics that mirror the sky, blurring the boundary between earth and heaven.
Lapis lazuli has always carried meaning: protection, wisdom, truth. It was worn close to the body, carved into seals, set into objects meant to endure. Its beauty is not loud — it is deep, contemplative, and unwavering.
This collection draws from lapis’s ancient blue — a colour of distance and devotion — captured in layered washes that echo stone, sky, and the long memory of Persia. As precious as the stone, this hue has a subtle shimmer that isn’t overpowering.
Our ceramic pans and paints: Each pan is carefully handcrafted using our signature, closely guarded binder recipe, formulated for smooth application, depth of pigment, and a velvety rich finish that can also be reactivated. Each ceramic pan is hand-made in our studio by us and fired by a local ceramic studio. Ceramic is used traditionally in watercolours to help avoid beading and allow the artist to see the blend on the ceramic palette. (Check our our ceramic palette range)
We only source the very best quality professional grade pigments that are a reputable artist grade, with the highest ASTM I- excellent rating. We don’t cut corners either unlike other makers. We use a ratio of 1:1 on our paints so you get stronger and longer lasting paints.
Please note: Most good binder recipes have clove oil included, but our binder recipe has a little more to ensure in years to come, that no mould will develop. This sometimes makes our paints smell a little stronger than others.
Pan size:
Each pan is approximately equivalent to half a standard pan to slightly over, as our ceramic pans are handmade. Please take this into consideration before purchasing—no two are ever exactly the same.
Imperfectly perfect:
Our paints and pans are entirely handmade. Small variations and imperfections are part of their nature and are embraced as a mark of true craftsmanship. They are a symbol of the care, time, and love poured into every piece we create.
A colour rooted in history, crafted by hand, and made to be lived with on paper.
